I wish everyone out there that we all get through this safely and would like to extend a special message of solidarity to our friends in countries affected by a coronavirus. This is going to be a challenging time for everyone, but we must all do what we can to help each other through this.
Preventing the further spread of COVID-19 is a shared responsibility for us all. We have started a fundraising campaign on Facebook to support our awareness and food relief program. The number of confirmed cases in the country is 5, with 1 recovery, and the remainder in isolation. The number of tests in Nepal has been too low, largely due to a limited stock of equipment to test coronavirus disease. Nepal’s health sector is now facing a severe shortage of face masks and protective gear, and with poor health-care services and lacks medical infrastructure, staff and equipment; it is considered poorly prepared to handle a large-scale disease outbreak.
On March 22, 2020, the government decided to close its borders with both India and China to deal with the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. On March 23, Nepal imposed a nationwide lockdown until March 31st, but it is likely to be extended. There are growing worries about a prolonged shutdown leading to food shortages, economic hardship, and even social unrest. The hardest hit will be daily wage earners who have been severely impacted by the lockdown.
Our kindergartens have been closed for the past two weeks. We decided to act in the best interest of our local community and to help contain and mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
Clinic Nepal is open, and the regular hours of operation remain unchanged. We are being proactive wherever possible to support the good health and general wellbeing of the wider community as a priority. The Friendship Scout members have already begun going around Meghauli and nearby villages to raise awareness of COVID-19 related symptoms. I could not be more proud of the ways our staff is rallying to do the best we can under the circumstances.
